Chapter 20 - EVELYN’S APPEAL
One of Evelyn’s fraud counts was reversed on appeal because the jury instructions duplicated a transaction charged elsewhere.
The major convictions remained.
Her sentence was reduced modestly.
Headlines said:
BENNETT MATRIARCH WINS APPEAL.
Leo was twelve.
He saw it online.
“Does that mean Grandma didn’t steal?”
“No.”
“What does it mean?”
“One part of the trial had a legal problem. The court corrected it.”
“Then why does the headline say she won?”
“Because simple stories get clicked.”
He hated that answer.
So did I.
Evelyn eventually transferred to a medical facility because of heart disease.
She requested contact with Leo.
He said no.
At fourteen, he agreed to read one letter.
Evelyn wrote:
I am sorry I struck you.
Then:
I was frightened that your mother’s family would erase ours.
Leo stopped.
“She’s still blaming you.”
“Partly.”
He kept reading.
She admitted the cupcake had nothing to do with food rules.
She was angry because investors were watching and she believed Leo represented a threat to the family hierarchy she wanted to preserve.
That admission finally connected the emotional and financial truth in her own words.
Leo asked:
“Was I a threat?”
“No.”
“Then why did she think that?”
“Because adults can turn children into symbols.”
He folded the letter.
“Do I have to write back?”
