Chapter 22 - DAVID AT FIFTY

David and Leo developed a relationship.

Not the old one.

A new one.

David never regained trust authority.

Never returned to Bennett Crest leadership.

He worked as an operations consultant for unrelated companies after completing disclosure requirements and professional restrictions.

He paid restitution for years.

At fifty, he asked Leo whether he wanted to hear the full story of how he met me.

Leo was twenty.

They discussed it without me.

Later Leo asked:

“Did Dad marry you for the trust?”

“I don’t know how to divide his motives.”

“He says he loved you before Mom—before Grandma told him everything.”

“She told him enough before we married.”

“Does that mean the love was fake?”

“No.”

“Then why did you leave?”

“Because love without respect for consent was not a marriage I could stay in.”

Leo nodded.

He did not need to hate David to understand me.

David apologized again years later.

This time I accepted it.

Not reconciliation.

Acceptance.

“You hurt me.”

“I know.”

“You failed Leo.”

“I know.”

“You also changed.”

“I hope so.”

“That doesn’t restore what we had.”

May you like

“I know.”

For the first time, the conversation required nothing else.
