Chapter 25 - ETHAN COMES HOME

Ethan completed custody and supervision.
He never returned to Caldwell Meridian leadership.
He worked in commercial property operations.
Good salary.
No dynasty.
He remarried.
A physical therapist named Anna.
I learned indirectly.
No reaction I could name.
Then at fifty-two, I saw him in a hotel lobby in Atlanta.
Accident.
“Emily.”
“Ethan.”
Gray at the temples.
Still handsome in the way that once mattered too much.
“How are you?”
“Good.”
“You?”
“Good.”
Silence.
Then:
“Is Richard okay?”
“Dad died last year.”
His face fell.
“I’m sorry.”
“Thank you.”
He looked away.
“He hated me.”
“No.”
Ethan looked surprised.
“He hated what you did.”
Difference.
He nodded.
Then:
“I read your victim statement again.”
“Why?”
“Treatment program.”
I did not know what to say.
“You said the camera was a second abuse.”
“Yes.”
“I understand that.”
“Good.”
No praise.
Then:
“Do you forgive me?”
“Parts.”
He smiled sadly.
“Still.”
“Yes.”
“The hitting?”
“No.”
“The money?”
“Some of the fear behind it. Not the choices.”
“Fair.”
Then:
“I’m sorry your father had to see you that way.”
“He was glad he came.”
Ethan nodded.
“I know.”
No hug.
No exchange of numbers.
We walked away.
I never saw him again.
May you like
Not tragedy.
Geography.
