Chapter 21 - ETHAN’S LETTERS

Ethan wrote from prison.
First:
I’m sorry.
No answer.
Second:
I loved you.
No answer.
Third:
Mom made everything about the company.
I almost threw it away.
Then the next line:
That does not explain why I hit you.
I kept reading.
He wrote:
The first time, I was angry because you said your lawyer would review the financing. I remember thinking you were choosing outsiders over me. That belief was mine.
Specific.
Then:
After you told urgent care you fell, I learned something terrible. I learned you would protect me.
I stopped.
Cried.
Instead of being ashamed, I became less afraid of consequences.
There.
Abuse growing through impunity.
Then:
The cameras made it worse. I watched you after arguments. Sometimes you looked hysterical. I forgot I had made you afraid.
That was the edited story entering his own head.
Then:
The sleeping signature is the thing I cannot explain without sounding insane. I thought if you woke and saw the deal closed, you would be angry and then eventually understand.
Eventually.
Again.
I answered once.
Understanding after the fact is not consent before it.
He replied:
I know now.
No more letters for a year.
Good.
Dad asked:
“Do you forgive him?”
“Parts.”
“You say that about everyone.”
“Useful.”
“Do you still love him?”
I thought.
“No.”
Then corrected.
“I love who I thought we were.”
Dad nodded.
“That makes sense.”
No one demanded hatred.
No one demanded forgiveness.
That helped.
Then a final letter from Ethan arrived after release from treatment program inside custody.
You said the camera was a second abuse.
I understand now.
The first abuse was hurting you.
The second was deciding I owned the meaning of what happened afterward.
That sentence stayed.
May you like
Not because it redeemed him.
Because it finally named the thing.
