Chapter 24 - THE CAMERA BECOMES TRASH

The original camera remained evidence for years.

Appeals.

Privacy litigation.

Related proceedings.

Eventually I received notice:

No longer needed.

Return or destruction?

Destroy.

No museum.

No memory box.

No blinking red light preserved as symbolism.

The footage remained in official archives for required periods.

My lawyers kept necessary copies.

Years later Rachel said:

“You can delete yours.”

I did.

Almost all.

I kept Easter Final for a while.

Why?

The unedited clip contained:

Me on the floor.

Ethan.

The phone.

Then my voice:

“Dad… he hurt me again.”

For years I thought the important word was hurt.

Later I understood:

Again.

Again turned isolated incidents into a pattern.

A wrist.

Cheek.

Ribs.

Shoulder.

Fall.

Bad night.

Misunderstanding.

Again connected them.

At forty-seven, I deleted that clip too.

No ceremony.

Trash.

Empty trash.

Memory remained.

Enough.

I married again at forty-four.

Michael Torres.

Architect.

Widower.

Before marriage:

“I need separate finances.”

“Okay.”

“I need my own lawyer.”

“Okay.”

“I read everything.”

“Good.”

“I may leave rooms when voices get loud.”

“Okay.”

No wounded question:

Don’t you trust me?

Our prenup took two months.

Independent counsel.

Full disclosure.

At signing, Michael asked:

“Do we get cake?”

“No.”

He bought cupcakes anyway.

Consent can be boring and happy.

That became one of my favorite things about it.
