Chapter 9 - THE EMPTY ENVELOPE
The suitcase camera showed no tampering before Sebastian entered the dining room.
After the ambulance left, Michael carried it into the library.
He claimed he was protecting executive materials from guests.
For thirteen minutes, the library camera went dark.
When the feed returned, the suitcase sat beside the door.
Michael denied removing anything.
His office safe contained no schedule.
Eleanor’s safe contained my phone but no Zurich papers.
The missing document became the center of three proceedings.
The coercion investigation.
The resort-sale litigation.
The future guardianship dispute.
Helen’s index named it Schedule Twelve.
A partial memorandum described “continuity voting authority held for the first issue of Sebastian Vance.”
Issue meant child.
The trust did not specify male in the surviving paragraph, though other documents repeatedly used heir and grandson.
The women at the luncheon believed a boy mattered.
We did not yet know whether the legal instrument agreed.
Eleanor released a statement accusing Sebastian of stealing estate documents and me of manipulating his grief.
She also announced that I had voluntarily entered a private maternal-care agreement.
Rachel filed for sanctions and demanded the agreement.
Eleanor produced a document bearing my signature.
The signature was genuine.
The date was eight months earlier.
I remembered signing a family insurance update at Christmas.
The document title then had been Vance Maternal Support Enrollment.
The version now before the court included six additional pages granting the family authority to arrange postpartum housing and infant care.
A forensic examiner found that the signature page was original.
The preceding pages were printed later.
A classic substituted-document scheme.
Eleanor had preserved the signature page until pregnancy gave it value.
The court suspended every purported agreement.
It also ordered preservation of estate records and prohibited Eleanor from acting on any guardianship or proxy document.
Then Michael disappeared.
His car was found at the airport.
No flight record used his name.
His phone remained in the vehicle.
Inside the trunk, police found Sebastian’s opened Zurich envelope.
No Schedule Twelve.
Only a handwritten note from Charles Vance.
The child is not a crown. If Eleanor treats him as one, remove her before she removes his mother.
Charles had anticipated the danger.
Like so many dead patriarchs, he had written warnings instead of confronting the living problem fully.
The note also contained a number.
Rachel traced it to a safe-deposit vault held by Vance Continuity Trust.
Authorized access required two people.
Sebastian.
And the current family matriarch.

The certificate was signed by Dr. Crane.
