Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN ON THE FLOOR

The edited footage spread faster than the court order correcting it.

One clip showed me crawling beneath the table.

Another showed Sebastian flipping it.

A narrator said I had refused medical food, created a disturbance, and manipulated my husband into attacking elderly women.

My stained dress became costume.

My fear became strategy.

Vance Meridian employees received anonymous emails saying I intended to sell the company after the baby’s birth.

The resort buyer threatened to sue for interference.

Eleanor held a press conference outside her attorney’s office.

“My concern has always been the unborn child.”

Rachel advised silence until we secured the full footage.

I ignored her.

That was my first public mistake.

I stood outside the courthouse and answered reporters.

“She forced food into my mouth. She held me beneath a table. She planned to take my son.”

A journalist asked whether I wanted control of Vance Meridian.

“No.”

“Then will you renounce the protector role?”

The question trapped me.

Renouncing immediately could restore Eleanor’s temporary authority.

Refusing sounded like ambition.

“I will follow the court.”

The clip appeared under another headline.

CLARA VANCE REFUSES TO GIVE UP BILLION-DOLLAR POWER.

Rachel did not shout.

“That is why we prepare.”

“I told the truth.”

“You answered a legal strategy question while bleeding emotionally in public.”

She was right.

Truth without structure could still be used against me.

The full camera drive remained missing with Michael.

Crown Meridian’s server contained fragments but not the clearest angle beneath the table.

Patricia’s phone captured Eleanor’s hand near my face, but the bone remained hidden by the cloth.

Sebastian’s hallway recording captured the words.

The physical evidence showed bruises and cuts.

Enough for investigation.

Not enough to overcome every edited image in public.

At home, I woke hearing laughter.

I refused to eat chicken.

The baby kicked whenever my heart raced.

Dr. Lee warned that stress alone did not automatically trigger labor, but my blood pressure required monitoring.

Sebastian moved into the guest room.

Not because I wanted separation.

Because I could not sleep when anyone approached unexpectedly.

He knocked before entering every room.

He asked before touching me.

Small permissions rebuilt what his family had taken.

Then the audit found the resort sale’s real price.

The properties were worth almost four hundred million dollars more than the proposed transaction.

Eleanor’s buyers planned to resell two within a year.

The private advisory fees were not the only theft.

The company itself had been deliberately undervalued.

Samuel ordered all deal documents preserved.

A junior analyst named Camille Reed contacted him secretly.

She had prepared the higher valuation.

Michael instructed her to replace it.

She saved the original.

Before she could testify, her employment file was leaked online, including a past bankruptcy and custody dispute.

The pattern had moved beyond me.
