Chapter 9 - MY MOTHER’S PLAN
Marlene had begun planning after I mentioned Colorado.
She believed Rebecca would become Rosie’s primary maternal influence if we moved.
She also feared losing access to the conservatorship.
Her private messages to Bethany described both concerns as the same emergency.
MARLENE: Rebecca will make Rosie forget Hannah’s place in our family.
BETHANY: Hannah was her sister.
MARLENE: That is why she is dangerous.
Another message:
MARLENE: Aaron thinks the settlement belongs only to Rosie.
BETHANY: It does.
MARLENE: Family care deserves compensation. He would understand if grief had not made him selfish.
The money was legally Rosie’s.
Marlene interpreted any boundary around it as rejection.
She proposed the guardianship petition.
Bethany proposed provoking me at a party where witnesses and cameras would exist.
Walter agreed to help restrain Rosie.
Daniel was told only that the family needed evidence of my temper.
No single person created every part.
Each contributed the form of harm they already knew.
Marlene supplied justification.
Bethany supplied performance and cruelty.
Walter supplied force.
Daniel supplied the camera and silence.
Their roles fitted together because they had practiced them for decades.
Marlene entered a negotiated plea.
She admitted conspiracy to commit unlawful restraint, child endangerment, attempted guardianship fraud, forgery, evidence tampering, and attempted witness influence.
A more serious charge alleging she intended bodily injury was dismissed because the evidence showed she expected fear and visible distress but objected after Bethany’s slap.
That did not make her safe.
It made the legal finding precise.
Walter pleaded guilty to unlawful restraint, child endangerment, conspiracy, evidence destruction attempt, and aggravated assault for throwing the glass.
He also admitted receiving income from unauthorized child recordings.
Daniel entered a deferred-prosecution agreement.
He admitted helping stage filming, failing to intervene, and accepting proceeds. He surrendered income, completed community service, underwent treatment, and agreed to testify truthfully.
If he complied for three years, specified charges would dismiss.
He was not declared innocent.
His early preservation of the cloud backup and full cooperation affected the outcome.
Bethany continued toward trial.
Her defense planned to argue that Marlene manipulated everyone.
Then prosecutors recovered messages between Bethany and a potential sponsor.
The sponsor asked whether children’s reactions were authentic.
