Chapter 10 - THE SCRIPT BETHANY WROTE

Bethany had written a production outline called The Fragile Child Experiment.

It described Rosie as “overprotected after maternal loss.”

The outline included:

Stage a missing luxury item.

Separate the child from the father.

Apply harmless visible pressure.

Record denial and tears.

Capture father’s aggressive confrontation.

End with family discussion about resilience.

The phrase harmless visible pressure referred to suction marks.

The slap was not listed.

Bethany’s attorney argued that her departure from the script was an impulsive mistake.

The prosecution argued that intentionally frightening and restraining a four-year-old was criminal before the slap occurred.

Both were true in different ways.

The guardianship plan transformed the video from cruel content into evidence manufacturing.

Bethany’s company records showed she had prepared two edits in advance.

Version one would portray me as violent.

Version two would portray Rosie as dishonest and overdramatic if I remained calm.

There was no outcome in which my child was allowed dignity.

The trial began fourteen months after the party.

Rosie did not testify in open court.

Her forensic interview was admitted under child-witness procedures after legal review, supported by video and physical evidence.

I testified about finding her, photographing the marks, carrying her into the room, striking Bethany, and leaving.

Bethany’s attorney asked whether I hated my sister.

“No.”

“You struck her hard enough to make her fall.”

“Yes.”

“You were enraged.”

“Yes.”

“You had previously argued with your parents about moving.”

“Yes.”

“So the party was part of a larger family conflict.”

“The conflict did not create Rosie’s bruises.”

The attorney suggested my photographs were designed to strengthen a custody dispute.

“The first photographs were taken before I knew a guardianship petition existed.”

“Why photograph before comforting your daughter?”

“Because I knew my family would call it a misunderstanding.”

That answer came from the deepest failure of my childhood.

I knew them.

I simply had not protected Rosie soon enough from what I knew.

The prosecution played the bathroom video.

Bethany looked away during the slap.

The jury did not.

After five days of evidence, Bethany chose not to testify.

Her attorney rested.

During closing arguments, he described her as a reckless content creator manipulated by a controlling mother.

The prosecutor displayed Bethany’s message.

I can make the Reed girl cry on cue.

The jury left to deliberate.

Three hours later, the foreperson sent a note.

They had discovered an inconsistency in the timestamps.

One video had begun before Rosie even arrived at the party.
