Chapter 5 - THE CAMERA IN THE TOWELS
The video lasted six minutes and eleven seconds.
I watched only once.
A victim advocate sat beside me.
Rosie stood near the sink asking for me.
Bethany accused her of stealing the bracelet.
Rosie denied it.
Walter blocked the door with his body.
Marlene told her to stop crying because “big girls do not ruin parties.”
Bethany searched the cardigan and shoes.
When Rosie tried to move around Walter, he caught her arm.
Bethany brought out Marcus’s suction-dart blaster.
“You like games,” she said. “Every time you lie, you get a red circle.”
Rosie did not understand.
Bethany pressed the suction tip against her forearm and pulled it away.
The first mark appeared.
Rosie cried.
Marlene looked toward the camera.
“That is enough.”
For one second, I believed she might stop it.
Then she added:
“She needs to look upset, not injured.”
Bethany pressed another dart against Rosie’s arm.
Walter said, “Keep her still.”
The older marks came from Saturday.
Bethany referenced them.
“You handled the quiet game last week.”
Rosie said, “I told Daddy I didn’t like Grandma’s game.”
Marlene’s face changed.
“You told him?”
Rosie nodded.
The slap came after that.
Not because of a bracelet.
Because Rosie had spoken.
Bethany struck her cheek and immediately looked toward the camera.
Walter swore.
Marlene said, “That was too hard.”
Bethany answered:
“He has to see something, or he won’t react.”
The room inside me became silent.
This had not been discipline.
They had injured my daughter to provoke me into performing violence for a guardianship petition.
The action camera continued recording after Bethany left the bathroom.
Walter held the door while Rosie begged for me.
Marlene removed the camera but failed to stop its upload.
Before the lens went dark, she said:
“Once Aaron hits Bethany on camera, Graves will have what he asked for.”
Attorney Graves had not asked anyone to manufacture evidence. His emails made that clear.
Marlene had converted a demand for proof into permission to create it.
Police arrested Bethany that evening.
Walter and Marlene surrendered the following morning through counsel.
Initial charges included child battery, unlawful restraint, conspiracy, evidence tampering, obstruction, and attempted fraud connected to the guardianship plan.
The thrown glass added a separate assault-related count against Walter.
Daniel was investigated for conspiracy and failure to protect a child. His early cooperation did not erase participation.
Child protection opened an assessment concerning Marcus because Bethany lived with him.
Marcus’s father, Jason Cole, had divorced Bethany three years earlier and shared custody.
He filed for emergency primary placement after viewing only a summary of the evidence.
The court granted it temporarily.
Bethany called the removal an attack on motherhood.
The family court called it a safety assessment.
Then detectives searched Bethany’s company servers.
She operated a small online marketing business named BrightHouse Family Media.
The server contained hundreds of unlisted videos.
Children crying.
Children being startled.
Children accused of things they had not done.
