Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO SOLD ELEVEN MINUTES

Adrian was found in a motel two counties away.

He had not fled the country.

He had been waiting for payment that never arrived.

Through counsel, he admitted disabling cameras and copying my badge. He claimed Isabella told him the plan was a private custody test designed by family attorneys.

He knew Ethan would be hidden for several hours.

He said he believed William would sign the trust amendment, Isabella would “discover” Ethan, and the family would announce a misunderstanding.

“Why frame Emma?” Detective Brooks asked.

Adrian looked at me through the interview-room glass.

“Because staff evidence is easier to believe.”

He had planted the backpack in my cabinet.

He denied writing the ransom note.

He denied locking Ethan inside.

According to him, Isabella kept the brass key.

His statement was motivated by fear of prison. It required verification.

He surrendered one damaged backup drive.

Most video had been overwritten.

A single clip survived from the pump-house tunnel.

Isabella led Ethan toward the mansion.

Another person followed, carrying a printer box.

The face was hidden.

The figure’s height and clothing could match several employees.

Adrian insisted it was not him.

Then financial investigators found a payment promised to Adrian through a foundation vendor.

The vendor had received 420,000 dollars over two years for “child resilience programs.”

No such program existed.

Isabella controlled the approvals.

William’s audit had discovered the payments.

Before police could freeze the vendor account, the remaining money moved to an offshore holding company.

The transfer required two electronic approvals.

Isabella’s.

And William’s.

His credential had been used again.

This time, the login came from the secure computer in the hotel where William was staying.

Someone had entered his room while he was in court.
