Chapter 13 - THE ELEVEN SECONDS SHE WANTED

I knew the conservatory fire doors.

Housekeeping tested them twice a year. The western door always caught against the marble track when dirt collected beneath the edge.

I grabbed the emergency cleaning cart near the command post and shoved its steel handle into the track before the door could close.

The barrier struck it and stopped three feet above the floor.

Police retained a view.

Isabella pulled Ethan toward the remote vehicle.

William moved.

Brooks caught his arm.

“Do not give her another violent image.”

He stopped.

The lesson cost him everything to learn.

I dropped to my knees on the other side of the partially lowered door.

“Ethan.”

His eyes found mine.

“Remember the first wall?”

He nodded.

“You put your fingers through the vent.”

Isabella tightened her grip.

“Do not speak to her.”

I kept my voice steady.

“You helped me find you. You can help them see you now.”

A maintenance mirror hung beside the loading entrance. Ethan shifted his body slightly, angling it toward the glass.

The reflection showed Isabella’s free hand.

She held a small remote, not a weapon.

Brooks signaled the officers.

William placed the leather case on the floor and pushed it under the fire door.

Isabella released Ethan for one second to reach for it.

He dropped flat.

Police fired a nonlethal impact round into Isabella’s forearm. The remote fell.

The vehicle rolled into a stone planter and stopped.

Ethan crawled beneath the fire door toward me.

I pulled him through.

Isabella lunged after him.

William could have kicked her again.

He did not move.

Two officers restrained her before she crossed the track.

She screamed that the Sterling family belonged to her, that William had stolen her future, that Ethan would have been safe if everyone had followed instructions.

Ethan clung to my apron even though I no longer worked there.

“I didn’t ruin everything?” he asked.

“No.”

Behind us, investigators entered the vehicle.

They found cash, forged passports, medication, and a second set of trust documents.

The medication had not been used on Ethan. Laboratory testing later confirmed it was intended for sedation.

Inside Isabella’s handbag were the brass key, cloned badges, and a phone controlling the mansion doors.

The phone’s last unsent message was addressed to a financial contact:

Once William signs, release the kidnapping video and move the shares.

Police preserved it before touching anything else.

Adrian’s backup drive authenticated the hidden-room footage. Rebecca’s phone authenticated the financial archive. The physical evidence tied Isabella to both abductions.

For the first time, the case no longer depended on one frightened child or one housekeeper’s word.

As officers led Isabella away, she looked at William.

“You chose staff over your wife.”

He answered without raising his voice.

“I chose the child you treated like property.”

The conservatory doors rose.

Sunlight entered across the marble.

Ethan remained in my arms until the paramedics arrived.
