Chapter 10 - WHY ETHAN HAD TO DISAPPEAR
Police compared the audio pulse with the mansion’s service equipment.
The match was strongest near the west ballroom pantry.
A warrant team entered through three routes while William remained outside.
I stayed with Detective Brooks and identified the housekeeping passages from memory.
Behind the pantry shelving, officers found the dumbwaiter shaft open.
A child’s shoe lay on the platform.
Ethan was no longer there.
Inside the shaft, someone had taped a flash drive.
The files revealed the first complete layer of Isabella’s plan.
William’s audit had found millions missing from the Sterling Foundation. If the board removed Isabella and the divorce proceeded, her financial access would end. The prenuptial agreement also limited her settlement if fraud or child abuse were proven.
A staged disappearance solved several problems.
It made William desperate enough to transfer voting control.
It delayed the audit.
It allowed Isabella to return Ethan publicly and become the parent who “saved” him.
And it gave her a servant to blame.
Me.
The drive contained draft ransom messages, trust amendments, and photographs of my badge, locker, and handwriting samples.
It did not contain the complete financial records or the identity of the person who had removed Ethan from the family center.
One video showed Isabella coaching Ethan:
“Everyone will believe Emma took you because people believe women like her need money.”
Ethan began crying.
The video ended before the next instruction.
William watched once, then turned away.
“I brought her into his life.”
Detective Brooks stopped him.
“Guilt is not evidence. Help us find your son.”
A new file appeared remotely on the drive while we were viewing it.
Live ballroom camera.
Ethan sat tied to a chair beneath the chandelier.
Behind him stood Isabella.
She was supposed to be at the family center under supervision.
The woman there had been wearing a disguise and entering under Isabella’s identity.
The real Isabella looked into the camera.
“Midnight, William. Bring the original voting certificates.”
