Chapter 26 - KIPLING’S PARTY

At thirty-four, Kipling hosted a birthday party for his daughter Lucy.

Yes.

He became a father.

No, autism did not prevent it.

No, parenthood did not cure or complete him.

Lucy turned four.

She loved:

Dinosaurs.

Purple icing.

Loud music.

Her father did not.

So the party had:

Music outside.

Quiet house inside.

Headphones available.

No requirement for anyone to use them.

Lucy wanted twenty balloons.

Kipling hated popping sounds.

He bought reusable fabric balloons instead.

I laughed.

“Engineering.”

“Survival.”

Halfway through the party Lucy screamed because another child touched her cake dinosaur.

Kipling crouched.

Talked calmly.

No shame.

No:

You’re ruining it.

No:

People are watching.

When Lucy settled, she looked at him.

“Did I ruin party?”

Kipling’s face changed.

Only for a second.

“No.”

“I yelled.”

“Yes.”

“Party still?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

Ran back.

Kipling looked at me.

“Mom.”

“I know.”

He shook his head.

“I didn’t even think about Grandma until she asked that.”

That might have been the purest healing.
