Chapter 23 - WHAT SCHEDULE B ACTUALLY GAVE THEM
Judge Mercer refused to decide which woman deserved sympathy.
“The trust distributes authority according to language and law, not affection.”
Experts authenticated Lucía’s seal, signature, paper, and references to older records. Adrian’s descent from Elena was established through public documents and voluntary adult testing. Isabella’s line through Marina was established without forcing Elena to turn kinship into a performance.
Lucía’s intent was narrower than everyone feared.
Schedule B did not give every descendant half the house.
It created temporary shared protection whenever a Vance attempted to obtain Oakhill through coercion, deception, or marriage. One family branch could not sign away the other’s rights while the truth remained disputed.
Once the danger ended, the independent trustee had to determine original ownership, good faith, and access to concealed family records.
Wendy’s trust held the original beneficial title.
Adrian claimed nothing more.
Isabella presented the harder question.
Priya did not pretend she was innocent. Isabella used Wendy’s phone, hid the affair, questioned the transfer, wore the earrings, and stood beneath the arch anyway.
But she also copied the Monday folder before the closing and later surrendered her phone and messages.
Richard’s lawyer argued that fear-driven cooperation deserved no weight.
Judge Mercer replied, “Most useful truth arrives with mixed motives.”
Isabella testified.
“I wanted the house. Then I wanted proof that wanting it had not made me a criminal. I did not begin by wanting justice.”
“Why preserve the files?” Priya asked.
“Gregory said once the deed recorded, Wendy could fight later. I understood that later meant years of proving she never agreed.”
Judge Mercer ruled that Isabella’s knowing participation disqualified her from beneficial ownership. Her later cooperation preserved access to records concerning Elena, Marina, and Lucía.
Adrian received the same archival rights and no ownership.
Temporary shared control ended.
Oakhill returned to Wendy’s trust.
Outside court, Isabella approached with Priya beside her.
“I lost the house.”
“It was never yours.”
“I know.”
This time the words carried no expectation of reward.
“What happens to the archive?” Isabella asked.
“It will be copied and administered independently.”
“May I come to the house?”
“The ruling gives you records, not my rooms.”
Isabella nodded and did not argue.
Elena emerged holding the second pair of pearls from Box 317. She placed neither pair in anyone’s hand.
“These belonged to two sisters. They will not become prizes for winning property.”
She asked the fiduciary to hold both sets in the archive until each branch agreed where they belonged.
Across the steps, officers escorted Richard from a detention hearing. He saw Elena and stopped.
Fear crossed his face before resentment replaced it.
“He has Arthur’s eyes,” Wendy said.
Elena shook her head.
“Arthur raised him.”
Wendy turned.
Elena’s voice lowered.
“Richard Vance was my first child. Richard Morrow took him before Marina was born.”
