Chapter 16 - THE NAME IN THE DARK

The emergency lights did not come on.

One second Wendy was watching Elias Grant lift the paper beneath his magnifying lamp. The next, the jewelry shop vanished into darkness.

The alarm began counting down.

Amelia pulled Wendy below the glass counter. Detective Ortiz ordered everyone to remain still.

From beyond the rear door, a man said, “Lucía.”

Not as a threat.

As if the name had escaped him after years of silence.

The lock shook. A second voice sounded outside.

“Open it, Adrian.”

Ortiz announced herself. Glass shattered near the stockroom.

The man called Adrian answered through the door.

“Richard’s driver followed me. He wants the paper.”

Police responding to the alarm caught the second man in the alley carrying insulated cutters and a phone registered to an Alder Crest security contractor.

When power returned, Adrian Morrow stood inside the shop in handcuffs. He was fifty-eight, silver-haired, and carried a Halcyon Trust access card.

The strip remained under an evidence cover.

Lucía’s sentence ended with a name:

ADRIAN ELIAS MORROW.

Isabella stared at him.

“Who are you?”

“Marina was my half sister.”

The four pearls on Elias’s table suddenly belonged to more than one hidden branch.

Adrian said Elaine Morrow was his mother—Elena Marín. He had moved her after men connected to Richard Vance found her clinic. He denied cutting the power.

“I came through the rear because Martin Vale warned me the front was watched.”

“Where is Martin?” Ortiz asked.

“Trying to stay alive long enough to give you the memorandum.”

“You expect us to trust him?”

“No. Verify what he preserved.”

Inside Adrian’s coat, officers found a sealed letter to Judge Mercer. Wendy looked at his Halcyon card.

“Your foundation placed Gregory at the charity dinner.”

“I was a director. I did not invite him.”

“Halcyon paid him.”

“Margaret Vale approved the stipend.”

“Her brother stole Lucía’s records.”

“Yes.”

“And no one warned me for seven years?”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“By the time I understood, Richard had tied Halcyon’s funding to your largest client.”

“That is another way of saying you were afraid.”

“It is.”

The honesty did not excuse him.

Elias examined the second setting from the earrings Isabella wore into the garden. Its hinge bore recent tool marks. Something had been removed before the wedding.

“That setting held the final page,” Adrian said.

“Who opened it?” Wendy asked.

He looked through the glass at Isabella.

“Someone who already knew the pearls were not only jewelry.”

Isabella went pale.

“I saw the loose hinge,” she whispered. “But I didn’t remove anything.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I wasn’t talking about you.”

Wendy understood before he said the name.

Celeste had known exactly where Lucía hid the truth.
