Chapter 18 - THE FOUNDATION THAT CHOSE FOR HER
Margaret’s signature was not the only problem.
The destruction certificate came from Warren Pike’s assistant using a template meant for donor letters. It proved Halcyon had manufactured a reason for the memorandum’s absence.
Judge Mercer ordered the archive preserved. Pike resisted until Marcus found a two-hundred-thousand-dollar payment from Alder Crest to one of Pike’s funds two days before the garden ceremony.
It was a commitment fee.
Pike had already been paid to accept Gregory’s authority without speaking to Wendy.
He stopped answering questions.
Adrian surrendered every Halcyon message he possessed. The records showed Margaret began watching Richard years earlier, after Martin found Arthur Vance’s repaid loan presented as an unpaid family debt.
Margaret arranged the charity dinner to place Gregory near Wendy. She assumed Wendy would recognize what Richard was doing.
Wendy read that assumption twice.
“She selected me because she thought I was difficult to deceive.”
Amelia remained silent.
“And when I trusted him, she protected the investigation instead of me.”
Halcyon’s introduction to Reyes Strategy Group’s first major client had been genuine. Wendy earned the company’s later success. But Margaret used the relationship to keep Gregory financially dependent on Halcyon while he reported on Richard.
Then Margaret became ill.
Richard discovered the stipend, threatened to expose Halcyon, and quietly redirected Gregory. The foundation had inserted a watcher into Wendy’s life and then lost control of him.
The neutral examiner entered Halcyon’s archive. The shelf listed on Pike’s certificate was empty. Security logs showed the last visitor.
Martin Vale.
Three days later, Martin walked into the Oakhill police station carrying the missing case.
He had a healing cut on his temple and asked for no immunity.
“I took it before Pike could destroy it.”
“You sold Richard a photograph,” Ortiz said.
“To make him think I was useful.”
“You took his money.”
“To disappear.”
“You forged access to Lucía’s bank box.”
“Because Richard was searching for the key.”
Every answer contained a reason.
None erased the act.
The case held the complete memorandum, Margaret’s journal, and an audio reel Lucía had sent Halcyon.
The final page confirmed Celeste’s memory. Isabella’s participation could disqualify her from ownership, but preserving evidence before the pledge recorded allowed the trustee to protect her identity and family records.
Adrian had no automatic ownership either.
Schedule B was never a shortcut to inherit the house. It was an emergency shield preventing a Vance from using one family branch against another.
Margaret’s last journal entry was even clearer:
I thought proximity would reveal Richard’s plan. Instead, it gave Gregory access to Wendy. Do not call that unintended. I understood the risk and placed it on her.
Before Ortiz played Lucía’s reel, an officer entered.

An elderly woman waited in the lobby carrying the matching pearl earrings.
“She says her name is Elaine Morrow,” he said. “And she has come to finish Lucía’s recording.”
