Chapter 7 - THE SIGNATURE ON EMILY’S TABLET

Emily’s school tablet required a facial scan and passcode.
She had taken it to Michael’s house during a family dinner six weeks earlier.
Tyler asked to borrow it for a game.
Emily refused.
Michael told her sharing was respectful.
She entered the passcode while he watched.
The tablet contained an image of Lisa’s signature on a school medical form.
Someone traced it into a digital signing application.
Forensic technicians recovered the deleted project.
The forged signature had been assembled in three layers.
Lisa’s first name.
Her surname.
A copied date.
The stylus strokes came from Tyler’s registered user profile.
When detectives confronted him, his confidence cracked.
“Dad said it wasn’t stealing because Aunt Lisa would sign if she understood.”
“Did she?” the detective asked.
“No.”
“Then why use her signature?”
Tyler looked at his lawyer.
The interview stopped.
The family court held a three-day emergency hearing on Helen’s control and the property sale.
Helen testified remotely after physicians determined she could participate in short sessions with breaks.
She understood the company, property, and purpose of the hearing.
She remembered signing some papers.
She did not remember approving the sale.
Michael’s attorney attacked her memory.
“You recently confused Monday and Thursday.”
“Yes,” Helen said.
“You forgot a nurse’s name.”
“Yes.”
“You told Lisa there was a folder beneath a piano that staff initially could not locate.”
“They found it.”
The answer silenced the room.
Dr. Cole testified that Helen’s cognition improved significantly after unexplained sedatives were stopped. She had mild post-stroke impairment but retained the ability to express preferences and understand core financial choices with support.
The judge terminated Michael’s temporary authority.
A professional fiduciary and Helen’s chosen attorney took control.
Lisa received access as family, not unilateral financial power.
She accepted the distinction.
The property deed was declared presumptively invalid pending the full fraud proceeding. Sterling Harbor could not develop or encumber the land.
Michael lost the first major battle.
Then his attorney played the pool video.
Only ten seconds.
It showed me standing, striking Michael, and knocking him down.
The clip omitted Tyler’s stomps and Michael’s insults.
“Mr. Carter’s violence is relevant to any request that Lisa Carter receive greater family access,” the attorney argued.
Maya produced the unedited footage and my immediate admission to police.
The judge allowed me no authority over Helen’s affairs.
I had requested none.
My criminal case continued separately.
That evening, the edited clip appeared online.
Its title said:
WEALTHY UNCLE ATTACKS FATHER AT CHILDREN’S POOL PARTY.
By morning, my employer had placed me on leave.
Emily’s school received messages calling her a liar.
Someone posted our address.
Then Mason disappeared from Erica’s home.
His bedroom window stood open.
His shoes were gone.

On the pillow lay a drawing of the old pump house and three words:
DAD KNOWS I TALKED.
