Chapter 5 - THE BLUE FOLDER

Michael’s eight-year-old son had never been prescribed the drug.

His pediatrician confirmed it.

The online pharmacy account was created using Mason’s insurance information and Michael’s email. The prescriber was the memory-care facility’s medical director, Dr. Samuel Pike.

Pike claimed Michael told him Mason suffered severe sleep disturbance.

He had never examined the child.

“Then why prescribe?” investigators asked.

Pike said he believed another physician had completed the assessment.

No physician had.

The pharmacy shipped liquid medication intended for short-term use under close supervision.

Michael used it on Helen.

The false prescription allowed him to obtain it without attaching her name to the purchase.

The revelation changed Mason’s legal position.

He was not only a witness inside Michael’s home.

His identity had been used in the elder-abuse scheme.

Child services removed both boys temporarily while assessments took place.

Tyler went to a juvenile placement facility because of the assault investigation and concerns that he might intimidate Mason.

Mason entered emergency kinship care with his maternal aunt, Erica Lane.

Their mother, Dana, had died four years earlier after cancer. Erica had remained close to the boys until Michael gradually restricted visits.

Mason asked whether he could see Lisa.

Rachel arranged a supervised meeting at the child-advocacy center.

He entered carrying a plastic grocery bag.

Inside were three charging cables, a key, and a small paper notebook.

“Dad said phones make people stupid if they trust the cloud,” he said. “Tyler put copies somewhere else.”

“Where?” Lisa asked.

Mason pointed toward the key.

“The pump house.”

The family estate had an old irrigation building beyond the pool. Michael kept network storage and security equipment there because the main house’s internet system was unreliable.

Mason had seen Tyler copy videos to a black server.

“Why did Tyler record?” I asked from several feet away.

Mason looked at Rachel before answering.

“Sometimes he thinks it’s funny.”

“Anything else?”

“He says Dad lies to him too.”

Mason opened the notebook.

The pages contained dates, short sentences, and drawings.

Dad gave Grandma tea.

Tyler made Emily cry.

Dad said Uncle Daniel will hit him.

I didn’t want to hold the camera.

One page showed a stick figure kneeling near a door.

“Who is that?” Lisa asked.

“Me.”

“What happened?”

“Dad said I had to say you hurt Grandma.”

“Did he hit you?”

Mason nodded.

“Tyler did too.”

The police obtained a warrant for the pump house.

Inside, technicians found the server, archived camera footage, financial backups, and draft legal documents.

One folder contained the unedited videos from the pool.

Another held a scanned deed transferring Helen’s home and the estate into Sterling Harbor ownership.

The deed had been electronically recorded three hours before Tyler stomped on Emily’s hand.

Michael had not been waiting for Tuesday’s hearing to authorize the sale.

May you like

He had already transferred the property.

The hearing was meant to prevent anyone from undoing it.
