Chapter 3 - THE HEARING MICHAEL NEEDED TO WIN

Emily entered surgery at 8:42 that evening.
While we waited, Lisa told me the truth she had been trying to prove for weeks.
Helen Reed founded Reed Lakes Development with her late husband. The company owned two apartment buildings, commercial land, and the twelve-acre property where Michael’s pool party had taken place.
After Helen’s stroke, her doctors expected a long recovery but not permanent incapacity.
Michael obtained a temporary power of attorney for thirty days.
Then he stopped sending Lisa complete account statements.
He told her medical expenses were high.
He moved Helen from the hospital’s neurological program into a private rehabilitation center owned by an old business associate.
When Lisa asked for an independent assessment, Michael accused her of upsetting their mother.
“I thought he was controlling access,” she said. “I didn’t know he was bringing her to his house.”
“How did Helen get to the pool?”
“The facility says Michael signed her out for a therapeutic family visit.”
“She was barely conscious.”
“I know.”
Rachel returned with permission for us to view additional files from Tyler’s phone while police preserved the original.
The hidden folder was labeled FAMILY.
The first video showed Michael coaching Tyler before the pool assault.
The second showed Helen at the dining table in Michael’s house.
A clear liquid entered her tea from a small syringe.
Michael’s hand remained visible.
“Drink this, Mom. It helps with the shaking.”
Helen drank.
Minutes later, her head drooped.
Michael placed documents beneath her hand and guided a pen between her fingers.
A woman off camera said:
“The signature won’t survive examination.”
Michael answered:
“It only has to survive Tuesday.”
Lisa leaned forward.
“That’s Patricia Wells.”
The third video showed Mason crying in a pantry.
Tyler stood outside holding the phone.
“Say Aunt Lisa grabbed Grandma.”
“She didn’t.”
Michael’s voice came from farther away.
“Then you can stay there until you remember correctly.”
Mason looked into the camera.
“Aunt Lisa didn’t do it.”
The recording ended when the door closed.
I wanted to ask why Tyler had filmed his father’s crimes.
Rachel reminded me that children record for many reasons.
Power.
Amusement.
Insurance.
Fear.
Sometimes all four.
The family-court judge convened an emergency conference by video after police notified her of the assault and possible elder exploitation.
Michael’s attorney argued that the videos were incomplete, possibly manipulated, and unlawfully taken from Tyler.
The phone had been voluntarily handed to me by Mason, then immediately preserved by police.
The court would examine admissibility later.
For the weekend, Judge Teresa Caldwell appointed Northern Fiduciary Services to share control over Helen’s medical and financial decisions.
Michael retained no authority to move her without written approval.
The judge also ordered an independent physician to examine her.
Michael’s lawyer raised my assault.
“He attacked Mr. Reed in front of children.”
Maya Alvarez, the attorney Lisa hired that afternoon, answered:
“Daniel Carter admits striking him. That conduct should be addressed separately. It does not erase the planned assault on a child or restore Michael’s control over a vulnerable adult.”
The judge agreed.
I was charged the following morning with misdemeanor assault.
I entered no plea immediately.
My attorney advised cooperation and no contact with Michael.
I accepted both.
Emily’s operation lasted two hours.
Dr. Shah aligned the fractures and inserted three pins. The circulation remained good. Nerve function would require time.
When Emily woke, she asked whether Tyler had been arrested.
“Police are still deciding what charges and court process apply,” I said.
“Because he’s a kid?”
“Yes.”
“He’s fifteen.”
“Yes.”
“I’m a kid too.”
I had no comforting contradiction.
Near midnight, Detective Blake called.
Investigators had searched Michael’s office under a warrant based on the videos, forged statement, and account evidence.
They found no syringe.
They found a written dosing schedule for Helen.
Beside Monday’s date, Michael had written:
Enough for incompetency exam. Do not overdo before camera.
At the bottom of the page was another note.

If Lisa gets her own doctor, move Mother to Room 214.
The address beside it belonged to no rehabilitation center registered in Pennsylvania.
