Chapter 24 - CLARA READS THE RECORDING

Clara was twenty-one when she asked to hear the pit recording.

I had always known the day might come.

I still wanted to say no.

The archive protocol required her to request access through a trauma-informed review.

She did.

Her therapist asked:

“Why now?”

“I know what happened. I want to know what my mother sounded like.”

That answer frightened me more than curiosity about Trent.

We listened in a secure office.

The recording began before burial.

Trent arguing.

Linda directing.

My own breathing.

The scrape of dirt.

Clara gripped my hand.

Then:

Still defiant, Emily?

Linda:

Leave her in the pit a little longer. Hunger makes them compliant.

Clara paused the audio.

“She sounds bored.”

“Yes.”

“That’s worse.”

For her, maybe.

We continued.

My hidden phone.

Trent digging.

My voice:

Go ahead… keep talking.

Dispatch:

We have your location. Keep him talking.

Clara stopped it there.

She did not need the rescue section.

We sat in silence.

Finally she asked:

“Were you thinking about me?”

“Yes.”

“Only me?”

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“I was thinking about breathing. The phone. Mara. The straw. My legs. Whether the deputies would find the gate. Whether Trent would break the phone. You. Everything.”

She smiled faintly.

“Good.”

“Why good?”

“I don’t want pregnancy to turn you into someone who only existed for me.”

The child I once viewed as the reason I had to survive was now protecting my personhood from the story.

I cried.

Clara did not ask whether I forgave Trent.

She had learned that question was less useful than people imagined.

Instead:

“Do you still get scared around dirt?”

“Sometimes when it’s packed tightly around roots.”

“Do you garden?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because dirt is also dirt.”

She nodded.

The recording returned to archive.

No public release.

No documentary licensing.

May you like

No company training video.

Clara’s right to know did not become the public’s right to consume.
