Chapter 23 - LINDA’S LAST LETTER
Linda wrote to Mara near the end of her sentence.
Not me.
Not Clara.
Mara chose to share part of it years later.
Linda admitted she had introduced me to Trent for financial reasons.
She still insisted she believed marriage could become genuine.
She wrote:
I thought if the families became one, the Reed control would stop humiliating us.
Mara asked:
“Why did Grandpa Robert accept the deal?”
Linda wrote:
Because he was weak enough to prefer survival over pride.
Even after prison, Linda had not fully changed.
Then one paragraph shifted.
I taught you that comfort was something mothers gave when children obeyed. I called that discipline because admitting I liked control would have required me to see myself clearly.
Mara cried reading it.
“Is that an apology?”
“Partly.”
“Do I have to answer?”
“No.”
She did not.
Linda eventually left prison under supervised release at an advanced age.
She was barred from fiduciary roles and had no automatic access to Mara or Clara.
Mara met her once.
I did not.
Clara chose no contact.
Linda died several years later after a stroke.
Her lawful remaining estate passed through probate after restitution obligations.
She left Mara jewelry.
Mara kept one ring.
Sold the rest.
She asked whether keeping the ring meant forgiving her mother.
I said:
“It means you kept a ring.”
Objects did not need moral verdicts.
Linda left Clara nothing.
Clara shrugged.
“I didn’t know her.”
That was healthier than inherited resentment.
Carter Ridge’s annual reports no longer listed a Carter family chair.
The company renamed itself Ridge Cooperative Agriculture after workers and shareholders approved the change.
Some Carters objected.
Others supported it.
The orchard market retained the Carter Ridge brand because customers recognized it.
Identity became layered instead of erased.
My father’s name appeared only in historical governance records.
Mine appeared only where required by trust reporting.
