Chapter 16 - LINDA’S HANDS

Linda’s defense depended on distance.
She did not dig the pit.
She did not push me into it.
She did not pack soil around my pregnancy.
She did not take the insects from the bait box.
Trent did.
Her attorneys called her comments cruel but legally insufficient.
The prosecution answered with planning.
The background report.
Armitage communications.
The consulting agreement.
The prenatal guardianship draft naming her.
The psychiatrist language she helped solicit.
The extra soil delivery.
Messages:
Keep her hungry until she listens.
Another:
Mara stays outside. She needs to see what disobedience costs.
That message turned Mara from passive witness into intended audience.
Linda testified.
She admitted wanting the Armitage sale.
She admitted believing my father’s trust was unfair.
She admitted introducing me to Trent partly because she thought marriage could resolve the land dispute.
“Did you tell Emily that?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“It would have poisoned the relationship.”
The prosecutor paused.
“You believed truth would poison a relationship built partly for financial access?”
Linda’s jaw tightened.
She insisted she never expected Trent to bury me so deeply.
“Did you tell him to stop?”
“I told him to leave her a little longer.”
The recording answered for her.
She said hunger was metaphorical.
No one believed that after hours without food.
Mara did not testify live before Linda.
Her recorded forensic interview and prior sworn testimony were admitted under protective procedures where allowed.
Linda watched her daughter say:
“Mom wanted me to see what happened when women fought the family.”
For the first time, Linda looked old.
Not powerless.
Old.
The jury convicted her of conspiracy to commit unlawful restraint, coercion, attempted financial fraud, witness intimidation involving Mara, participation in abuse of a pregnant victim, and related document crimes.
She was acquitted of one direct assault count because evidence did not show she physically struck me during the burial.
Again, precision.
At sentencing, Mara submitted no statement.
I did.
“Linda did not need to put her hands on me. She built the room in which Trent believed his hands were authorized.”
Linda received substantial prison time and permanent fiduciary restrictions.
Her consulting interest in the Armitage transaction was forfeited where legally appropriate.
No family foundation role.
No control over Mara’s future finances.
No contact with me.
After the sentence, reporters called the Carter matriarch fallen.
I hated the phrase.
She had not fallen from natural authority.
Courts had removed authority she misused.
Mara called me through her therapist.
“Is it over?”
“The criminal trials are.”
“Do you feel better?”
“No.”
She seemed relieved by the honesty.

Healing did not arrive with verdicts on schedule.
That night, at thirty-seven weeks pregnant, my contractions began.
