Chapter 8 - THE SIGNATURE EXPERT

The eleven-million-dollar guarantee did not contain a crude forgery.
That would have been easier.
My signature was electronically applied using a certificate linked to my corporate identity.
The system log showed my credentials.
My laptop.
2:11 a.m.
A Tuesday.
I was asleep upstairs.
At least I thought I was.
Dad’s attorney said:
“Ms. Hart routinely allowed company administrative staff to execute approved documents through delegated digital credentials.”
I did not.
I sometimes authorized payroll staff to prepare forms.
I signed myself.
The forensic review found something worse.
My corporate password had been reset twelve minutes before the guarantee was signed.
Reset request originated from my father’s executive assistant account.
Multifactor verification went to an old tablet registered to the family-office number.
I did not know that tablet remained authorized.
Dad said it was an administrative mistake.
Maybe.
Then an email surfaced.
Kurt to executive assistant Meredith Sloan:
Need Jodie certificate current tonight. She already approved structure conceptually.
I had approved refinancing conceptually.
Not personal liability.
Those are not the same.
Meredith replied:
Should she sign tomorrow?
Dad:
She’s emotional about the related-party schedule. Just get closing set. We can clean consents after.
Clean consents after.
Rina highlighted the sentence.
The signature expert concluded the electronic process was unauthorized but could not identify who physically clicked the button without more evidence.
Dad’s office IP.
Meredith’s admin token.
My certificate.
Several possible hands.
Meredith requested counsel.
The refinancing bank froze the disputed guarantee entirely.
It did not accelerate the loan yet.
Hart Harbor negotiated a temporary forbearance.
The resorts kept operating.
Dad kept telling relatives I was threatening hundreds of jobs.
The actual lender letter said:
Operations may continue under interim covenants while ownership and authorization issues are reviewed.
No immediate mass layoffs.
Fear remained useful.
I sent the lender letter to no family member.

I did not wage a family fact campaign.
My attorneys filed what mattered.
