Chapter 21 - TAWNY WITHOUT A TITLE

Tawny resigned from Hart Harbor.

Not because the board forced her.

Her contract review would likely have reduced title and compensation.

She left first.

“I don’t want every meeting to be about whether Dad gave me the job.”

Fair.

She applied to five agencies.

Two rejected her.

One offered a midlevel role at half her previous compensation.

She took it.

Three months later, she called.

“I work with a twenty-three-year-old who is better at analytics than I am.”

“Tragic.”

“Shut up.”

We laughed.

Then stopped.

Our relationship did not become sisterly overnight.

She apologized again for the servant line.

This time:

“I said it because I knew serving me was the role everyone trained you into, and I liked having one place where I outranked you.”

That was ugly.

Specific.

Useful.

I apologized for my part too.

“I treated competence like proof I was smarter than you.”

“You did.”

“I know.”

“You were smarter about money.”

“Not everything.”

“Fine.”

Sibling repair became less about balanced blame than accurate blame.

Tawny cooperated with restitution.

She repaid unsupported personal expenses over time.

Sold the Range Rover.

Returned several branded items to the company or paid assessed value.

No prison.

No fraud charge where intent could not be established beyond reasonable standards.

Consequences did not need cinematic ruin.

She learned what her work was worth without family subsidy.

That changed her more than public humiliation would have.
