Chapter 7

The power of attorney appeared inside Marlene’s office.

State investigators searched Whitaker Celebrations after former employees reported document destruction.

They recovered a folder labeled:

M.H. CONTINGENCY.

Inside was a durable power of attorney naming Daniel as my financial agent.

It carried my signature.

Patricia Cole’s notary stamp.

The document granted authority over:

Real estate.

Bank accounts.

Taxes.

Litigation.

Gifts.

Trusts.

Digital assets.

It was dated May fourteenth.

That afternoon, I had been volunteering at a vaccination clinic in Savannah.

My badge records, mileage log, and photographs placed me there.

The power of attorney included a physician letter stating I showed early cognitive decline and might lack capacity to manage complex transactions.

The physician was Dr. Malcolm Kline, a geriatric psychologist.

I had never met him.

His letter described a telehealth consultation based on family observations and “brief patient interaction.”

No consultation occurred.

Investigators traced the interaction to a video call where a woman appeared off-camera claiming to be me.

Marlene spoke.

The call metadata placed it inside her office.

Dr. Kline had asked for direct assessment.

Marlene sent edited wedding-planning videos instead.

In one, I paused while discussing guest numbers and asked Vanessa to repeat a date.

The clip ended before Vanessa admitted she had changed the date twice.

Another showed me telling Daniel:

“I cannot keep doing this.”

The folder title said:

Emotional Decompensation During Wedding Stress.

I had meant I could not keep paying unexpected invoices.

A third showed me sitting silently after Marlene announced another fifty guests.

Silence became withdrawal.

Concern became confusion.

Boundaries became hostility.

Dr. Kline issued only a preliminary letter recommending full evaluation.

Marlene’s folder changed the heading to:

CAPACITY DETERMINATION.

The final sentence—requiring further assessment—had been removed.

Dr. Kline contacted investigators voluntarily after learning his report had been altered.

He faced professional review for relying too heavily on family materials without verifying identity.

Evidence did not show he knowingly joined the fraud.

Negligence had supplied useful language.

The forged power of attorney explained the wedding cameras.

If I refused the deed, Daniel could attempt to act under the false authority.

If I challenged it, the video of my “episode” would support the capacity narrative.

The trash-can seat was not a bride’s spontaneous cruelty.

It was the final step of a contingency plan.
