Chapter 13

Daniel wrote from prison.

The first letter arrived four months after sentencing.

Mom,

I keep thinking about the parking lot. I remember you asking what money we committed, and I lied even though everything was already collapsing.

I used to think Dad leaving made me different from him because I stayed close to you.

Now I understand you can remain physically near someone and still treat them as a resource instead of a person.

I am not asking for the lake house.

I am not asking you to visit.

I am trying to say the correct thing without turning it into another request.

I am sorry.

Daniel

I read it twice.

Then placed it in a drawer.

The second letter described financial-accountability classes.

The third blamed Vanessa less.

The fourth did not mention her at all.

By the seventh, Daniel wrote about the wedding guests.

Olivia Marks, one of his college friends, had visited him.

She told him several guests knew my seat was outside and said nothing.

Some laughed because Vanessa described it as a family joke.

Others assumed Daniel had approved.

He had.

Daniel wrote:

I kept imagining that if someone had moved your card, the entire night might be different.

But I saw the chair myself.

I was the person who could have moved it.

I chose not to.

That is the part I have to stop placing in other people’s hands.

I answered after a year.

Daniel,

I received your letters.

I believe you are beginning to describe your choices honestly.

I love you.

I do not trust you yet.

Love is not evidence that trust has returned.

Continue the work because your life requires it, not because you expect a particular outcome from me.

Margaret

I signed my name rather than Mom.

It felt cruel.

Leah disagreed.

“You wrote from the relationship that currently exists.”

Years later, I signed Mom again.

May you like

Not because everything was repaired.

Because the word became mine to offer instead of his to demand.
