Chapter 8 - The Rabbit Photograph

The clearest photograph showed Mr. Buttons.

That mattered.

Lucy sat at Evelyn’s breakfast nook with an empty plate.

Her rabbit lay on the windowsill.

In the anonymous report, caption:

Lucy arrived carrying comfort toy and repeatedly asked for food, saying Mother had withheld breakfast.

But I knew Lucy did not take Mr. Buttons to Grandma’s house voluntarily anymore.

She had stopped months before because Evelyn teased her.

Why was he there?

I checked my messages.

That day I had dropped Lucy off without rabbit.

A photo I sent Caroline from my car at 8:48 a.m. showed Lucy holding a dinosaur backpack.

No rabbit.

So Mr. Buttons must have already been at Evelyn’s house.

Then Lucy remembered.

Not because we asked.

She saw photo during therapist-approved review of items and said:

“That was old Buttons.”

An earlier duplicate?

Daniel had bought one rabbit.

No duplicate.

Then she corrected:

“Grandma kept him that day.”

Perhaps she had brought it previous visit and not returned.

Fine.

The point was location.

Grandma’s.

Then the food.

Lucy told therapist:

“Grandma said don’t eat yet.”

“Why?”

“Picture.”

“What happened after?”

“I got grilled cheese.”

So the empty plate did not document starvation.

It documented a staged pause before lunch.

That was the allegation.

Could a child misremember?

Yes.

Then Caroline called me at 11:30 that night.

Crying.

“Clara.”

“What?”

“I can’t do this.”

I sat up.

“Do what?”

“Mom says if I talk, we lose everything.”

My heart pounded.

“Caroline, are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Is Mom there?”

“Asleep.”

“Do you need somewhere to go?”

“No.”

Then:

“I took some pictures.”

There.

I said nothing.

“She told me it was to show you how hungry Lucy got after being with you.”

“Did you believe that?”

“At first.”

I closed eyes.

“Why?”

“Because Mom said school was worried.”

“Was school worried before the pictures?”

“I don’t know.”

“Caroline.”

“I don’t know!”

She sobbed.

Then:

“She made everything sound connected.”

“What everything?”

“You working late. Lucy eating fast. Lucy being picky. You paying the mortgage. You saying you wanted Mom to sell.”

My chest tightened.

“How is mortgage connected to Lucy eating?”

Silence.

Then:

“Mom said if she could prove Lucy needed more stability with us, you’d have to stop threatening the house.”

There.

Not yet the whole plan.

But close.

I said:

“Caroline, tomorrow you need your own lawyer before you talk to CPS.”

“What?”

“You may have participated in a false report.”

“I didn’t submit it.”

“Get a lawyer.”

“Are you going to turn me in?”

“I’m not covering for you.”

She cried harder.

I almost softened into rescuing.

Then thought of Lucy at the empty plate waiting for a photograph.

“No.”

I said it calmly.

“I am not covering this.”

Caroline whispered:

“Mom wrote it before Christmas.”

My whole body went still.

“What?”

“The report.”

Then:

May you like

“I have it on my phone.”

Chapter ten arrived the next morning.
