Chapter 18 - Caroline Tells Lucy the Truth
Dr. Pierce eventually approved a short therapeutic meeting with Caroline.
Not Grandma.
Caroline had cooperated.
Moved out.
Completed part of probation.
Asked for no rights.
Lucy agreed.
She carried Mr. Buttons.
Caroline cried when she saw her.
Dr. Pierce reminded:
“Keep adult feelings with adults.”
Caroline nodded.
“Hi, Luce.”
“Hi.”
Silence.
Then Lucy:
“Did you take picture?”
Caroline looked at Dr. Pierce.
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I made a bad choice.”
“Grandma told?”
“Grandma asked me. I still chose to do it.”
Good.
No blame dump.
“Did Mommy starve me?”
“No.”
Lucy stared.
“Why say?”
“I was scared about grown-up things and I helped tell a story that was not true.”
“House?”
Caroline’s face broke.
“Yes. The house was part of it.”
Lucy hugged Mr. Buttons.
“I’m not a house.”
Caroline sobbed.
“No.”
Dr. Pierce let silence stand.
Then Lucy:
“Can I have snack?”
There were crackers on table.
Dr. Pierce said:
“Yes.”
Lucy took them.
Caroline watched.
No one made her finish apology first.
That detail mattered.
At the end Caroline asked:
“Can I hug?”
Lucy said:
“Side hug.”
They did.
Then visit ended.
Caroline did not ask when next.
Good.
Later Lucy said:
“Aunt Caroline told truth.”
“Yes.”
“Does that make all fixed?”
“No.”
“Some?”
“Some.”
