Chapter 24 - The House Is Sold

The guardianship petition was dismissed.

Not withdrawn.

Dismissed after the court considered:

CPS findings.

Criminal verdict.

Custody evaluator.

Lucy’s therapy.

My own completed diversion.

The judge made one thing clear:

My table outburst was inappropriate.

It did not make me unfit.

Evelyn’s conviction did not automatically erase all possibility of future relationship.

But no court would force contact now.

Future contact depended on Lucy’s welfare, therapy, and my parental judgment.

Good.

Then Mom sold the house.

There was enough equity to pay mortgage and purchase a small condo with a modest loan.

She was not homeless.

The Christmas house belonged to strangers.

Caroline already lived separately.

She completed probation.

Worked full-time.

Paid her own rent.

No one asked me to rescue.

For first time, my monthly budget did not include another adult household.

I felt guilty.

Then realized guilt was not an invoice.

I let it exist.

No payment.

Then Mom wrote from jail.

One letter.

Nadine screened because court allowed legal correspondence not to Lucy.

Clara,

I used your generosity until I stopped seeing it as generosity.

I thought the house represented your father, our family, my security, and my place in Lucy’s life.

When you threatened the payment, I felt as if you were threatening all of those things at once.

That feeling was real.

What I did because of it was wrong.

Then:

I told Lucy food could be taken because she disobeyed. I told myself it was discipline. It was control.

Then:

I reported you because I wanted other people to make you afraid.

There.

No excuses.

Finally:

Do not show Lucy this unless someone says it is good for her.

Good.

I kept it.

Did not answer immediately.

Three months later, I wrote:

I believe your apology.

I do not trust you yet.

Lucy is not responsible for repairing either of us.

May you like

Clara.

That was enough.
