Chapter 9 - VICTORIA’S FAVORITE

Victoria had always loved status.
Not money exactly.
Order.
Presentation.
Sterlings arrived on time.
Children wore proper shoes.
Napkins stayed in laps.
She corrected grammar at Thanksgiving.
When Leo was a baby, she adored him.
Photographs proved.
Then developmental differences became visible.
He covered ears.
Ignored greetings.
Lined up cars.
Refused wool sweaters.
Meltdowns at restaurants.
Victoria called it indulgence.
After diagnosis:
She cried.
Not from concern.
From embarrassment.
Dominic told me:
“Give Mom time.”
I did.
Then Liam began appearing more.
Family picnics.
Victoria’s pool.
Holiday cookie baking when I was travelling.
I thought she was helping Brooke.
Maybe she was.
Then the boys were together.
Same age.
Liam neurotypical.
Easy social smile.
Loved formal clothes.
Ate whatever served.
Victoria compared.
“See how Liam sits?”
“Liam says thank you.”
“Liam doesn’t need headphones.”
I shut down comments when present.
What happened when I wasn’t?
The chart.
Good boy table.
Floor.
Cake earned.
Shoes required.
One CPS interview:
“Why did Leo crawl?”
Victoria said:
“He likes crawling.”
True sometimes.
“Did you require him to remain below table?”
“Only during tantrums.”
“Why?”
“To give him a smaller space.”
Could almost sound sensory-supportive.
Then:
“Did you serve food on floor?”
“Once.”
“Why?”
“He refused the chair.”
Maribel contradicted:
Leo tried to climb chair and Victoria said he had not earned it.
Evidence conflict.
Then Victoria said:
“Liam is family.”
Again.
CPS worker asked:
“Is Liam Dominic’s son?”
Victoria’s face changed.
She requested lawyer.
The next day, Dominic’s attorney sought protective order over paternity documents.
Rachel agreed to child privacy, not concealment relevant to custody/finances.
Then one text arrived in discovery.
Five years earlier.
VICTORIA:
The test came back?
DOMINIC:
99.99.
VICTORIA:
Then he’s ours.
DOMINIC:
Clara cannot know.
VICTORIA:
Not while she’s pregnant.
DOMINIC:
Not ever if possible.
My vision blurred.

The result itself would arrive next.
But the secret had already confessed its shape.
