Chapter 12 - BROOKE’S DEAL
Brooke did not get immunity.
She got a civil settlement eventually.
Different.
She returned $23,000 traceable to fake-service payments that she could not substantiate.
Not all funds she ever received.
Some were Dominic’s lawful support for Liam.
Some legitimate expenses.
Some disputed.
Dana Cho separated.
Brooke dissolved Sterling Child Development Services.
She signed a sworn statement:
No licensed therapy delivered.
Invoices drafted from templates Dominic provided.
Some descriptions knowingly false.
She believed Clara had not authorized the arrangement.
That mattered.
Why cooperate?
Fear of prosecution.
Guilt.
Protecting Liam.
All three.
Her lawyer negotiated with prosecutor separately.
Brooke later pleaded to a misdemeanor financial-deception offense rather than felony fraud due smaller direct role, restitution, and cooperation.
Probation.
Community service.
No jail.
No contact with Leo except if Clara and court later approved.
Then her cruelty.
No criminal charge for insulting a child.
But family court heard it.
Brooke admitted:
“I called Leo a dog because I wanted to hurt Clara.”
The custody evaluator asked:
“Did Leo hear?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She cried.
“I spent years believing Clara had stolen the life I was supposed to have.”
I almost laughed.
I had not known she existed as rival.
You cannot steal a contest you were never told you entered.
Then:
“Did that make Leo responsible?”
“No.”
“Liam?”
“No.”
Good.
She later told me through lawyers:
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
She was correct.
We did not become friends.
But both boys existed.
