Chapter 17 - LIAM

I met Liam properly at a child therapist’s office.
Not because I wanted a relationship.
Because Leo had learned the truth from age-appropriate explanation.
“Liam is Daddy’s son too.”
Leo stared.
“Brother?”
“Yes.”
“Same Daddy?”
“Yes.”
“Why secret?”
“Adults made bad choices.”
“Liam bad?”
“No.”
Immediate.
He relaxed.
Then:
“Liam get cake.”
“Yes.”
“Leo floor.”
My chest hurt.
“That was not Liam’s fault.”
He looked uncertain.
Dr. Sloan recommended sibling contact only after both children prepared.
Brooke agreed.
Dominic agreed.
First meeting:
Thirty minutes.
Neutral room.
No parents inside except therapists? Perhaps one caregiver each nearby. The boys already knew each other from Victoria’s house, but now relationship named.
Liam walked in holding a toy car.
Leo hid behind beanbag.
Liam said:
“Hi.”
Leo:
“Hi.”
Then:
“You brother?”
Liam shrugged.
“My mom says.”
Leo considered.
“Daddy says?”
“Yes.”
Then Liam said:
“Grandma says you don’t like cake.”
Leo’s face changed.
Therapist intervened gently.
“Grandma said lots of things. What do you like?”
Leo:
“Chocolate.”
Liam:
“Me too.”
That was it.
Children can begin where adults ruin things.
Chocolate.
Cars.
Blocks.
No inheritance.
No competition.
After twenty minutes Leo asked to stop.
Stopped.
Liam left.
Brooke thanked therapist.
Not me.
Good.
Later sibling contact continued monthly.
Not because we built blended family fantasy.
Because both boys wanted.
Dominic did not attend initially.
May you like
Victoria certainly did not.
The boys’ relationship belonged to them as much as possible.
