Chapter 6 - THE FOOTAGE THAT WAS NOT THERE
The missing primary recording became the center of the investigation.
Bethany said the camera malfunctioned.
Her device logs showed it recorded for seven minutes and forty-two seconds.
The file had been manually deleted.
The memory card remained missing.
Police searched Bethany’s apartment under warrant but found only empty card cases and editing equipment.
Frank’s criminal attorney argued the chair throw was an impulsive reaction to me “abducting” Rosie during a family dispute.
Party videos contradicted him. Rosie was already in my arms. I was walking toward an open exit. Frank had a clear line of sight.
The prosecutor charged him with assault involving a dangerous object and reckless endangerment.
He was released under conditions barring contact with me and Rosie.
Linda began calling extended relatives.
She said I had sent her husband to jail and ruined Bethany’s business.
Several relatives stopped speaking to me.
Others sent quiet messages saying they had always feared Frank’s temper.
No one had acted before.
Silence looked different once a chair broke on camera.
My cousin Emily finally gave a formal statement.
She had seen Bethany carry Rosie downstairs.
She heard Rosie scream after the lights went out.
When Emily moved toward the basement, Linda blocked her.
“Bethany knows what she’s doing,” Linda said.
Emily also recorded thirty seconds on her phone from the upstairs hallway.
The video did not show inside the basement.
It captured Frank standing with one hand on the door handle.
Rosie could be heard crying:
“I want Daddy.”
Frank answered:
“You finish what you started.”
Bethany’s voice came from inside.
The recording ended when Linda noticed Emily’s phone and ordered her away.
The evidence was powerful.
The defense attacked Emily’s delay and family resentment. Years earlier, Bethany had fired her from a part-time job.
Emily had a motive to dislike her.
That did not make the recording false.
Forensic examiners verified the file’s original creation time and found no editing.
The grandparent-visitation petition was dismissed without prejudice at my parents’ request. They claimed they wanted to reduce conflict.
Rachel believed they withdrew because the evidence had turned the petition into proof of planning.
The dismissal did not prevent them from trying again later.
SparkJoy’s internal emails revealed that a producer had rejected Bethany’s first challenge concept as too frightening.
Bethany replied:
Don’t worry. My family understands content.
The producer wrote:
No locked doors. No restraint. Stop immediately if the child asks.
SparkJoy had given explicit limits.
Bethany broke every one.
Then the company produced a payment record.
A fifteen-thousand-dollar advance had been deposited one day before the party.
Within an hour, Bethany transferred twelve thousand dollars to Linda and Frank.
