Chapter 10 - THE RAW FILE

The complete recording was recovered from an unexpected source.

SparkJoy’s producer had downloaded the uploaded file automatically before Bethany deleted it from the portal. She never opened it because the agency suspended the project after news of the police response.

Her laptop remained in company storage.

Forensic examiners verified the file’s hash, upload time, and device metadata.

The video began before Rosie entered the basement.

Bethany positioned the camera.

Linda placed the speaker.

Frank tested the door.

Rosie appeared holding Bethany’s hand, still wearing both shoes.

“I want Daddy,” she said.

“He’ll be back after you win,” Bethany answered.

Bethany sat Rosie on the stool and tied the left shoelace loosely around the rung.

Rosie immediately asked her to stop.

Bethany tightened it.

The lights went out.

The recording became mostly sound.

Scratching.

Rosie crying.

Linda speaking from outside.

Frank laughing once.

Then Rosie pulled hard enough to lose the shoe. She stood, struck the shelf, and screamed.

The door opened.

Light entered.

Rosie moved toward it.

Bethany grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

“We need the ending,” Bethany said.

Frank closed the door again.

The next two minutes contained no entertainment, no confusion, and no harmless misunderstanding.

They contained a child repeatedly asking to leave.

When my voice sounded upstairs, Bethany cursed.

The door opened.

Rosie ran into the hall.

Bethany followed and reached for her before I lifted her.

The recording continued through the argument.

It captured Frank throwing both chairs.

It captured Linda ordering me back.

It captured Bethany calling Rosie fragile.

It captured Rosie saying Frank held the door shut.

The full file answered nearly every factual question.

It also recorded me knocking Bethany’s hand away.

Her attorney slowed that moment and described it as assault.

The prosecutor reviewed it independently.

My movement was brief, defensive, and directed at preventing contact with Rosie. No charge followed.

Still, watching myself nearly turn toward Frank after the first chair frightened me.

For half a second, I had handed Rosie to cousin Emily and stepped forward.

Then Rosie screamed my name.

I stopped.

The difference between restraint and catastrophe had been one sound.

I told Dr. Shah about it.

“You stopped,” she said.

“I almost didn’t.”

“Then learn from the almost without pretending it became the act.”

The raw video became central evidence, but the defense challenged authentication and argued the sponsor’s automatic download violated Bethany’s privacy.

The judge found Bethany had voluntarily uploaded the file under a commercial agreement allowing agency review. The company’s preservation and later production complied with legal process.

The recording was admissible subject to specific redactions.

After the ruling, Frank requested a plea agreement.

He would admit throwing the chair and holding the door.

He wanted the charges involving planning dismissed.

His attorney said Linda and Bethany had designed the prank and he followed their instructions.

The audio captured him increasing the volume and closing the door.

He had not been a passive bystander.

The prosecutor offered a plea requiring him to state the complete role he could truthfully admit.

Frank asked for time.

Then Linda made her own offer.

She was willing to testify against Bethany.
