Chapter 25 - THE CHILD NORA RAISED
Nora became eligible for supervised release when Lily was twenty-three.
The court notified Lily because of protective orders.
Lily could submit a statement or request continued restrictions.
She read Nora’s sealed childhood history first.
It described ordinary moments Claire had not been allowed to witness fully.
Lily’s first step.
Her fear of thunder.
The name she gave a stray cat.
The night she learned to unlock the old phone.
Nora’s writing did not excuse her.
It preserved parts of Lily’s life no one else knew.
Lily cried for the caregiver she remembered and the captor evidence proved.
“I loved her,” she said.
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
“Does that hurt you?”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You do not apologize for what a child needed to survive.”
Lily requested permanent no-contact unless she initiated it.
The court granted the condition.
Nora was released to supervised housing after completing most of her sentence.
She could not work with children, vulnerable adults, medicine, or private households.
She continued therapy and reported regularly.
Two years later, Lily requested one mediated meeting.
Claire did not attend.
I waited nearby.
Nora entered without jewelry or uniform.
Lily wore the locket.
“I remember you reading to me,” Lily said.
“I remember.”
“I remember you hiding me when Victor came.”
“Yes.”
“I remember the slap.”
Nora’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“Which one was you?”
“All of them.”
The answer mattered.
Not a good Nora controlled by Victor and a bad Nora created by fear.
One person made different choices.
Lily asked whether Nora ever believed I was dangerous.
“At first. Then it became easier to pretend than admit what I had joined.”
“Did you love Mommy?”
“I admired her. I resented her because she kept refusing when I had surrendered.”
Claire later said that sentence helped more than an apology.
Lily did not forgive Nora aloud.
She did not request another meeting.
She left with her childhood record.
The contact ended without public reconciliation.
Nora lived quietly until her death years later.
No trust was restored.
No family role returned.
Lily preserved one story Nora had written about Claire teaching her the lullaby.
