Chapter 3 - THE MASTER KEY
Police collected Sophie’s denim jacket.
Both pockets were empty.
The lining inside the right pocket had been cut along the lower seam. The thread looked fresh, but no one could say when it had been damaged.
Preston’s attorney called the cut proof that Sophie had hidden something.
The detective called it an unexplained alteration.
I called Lena Morales, a family and commercial attorney recommended by the hospital social worker.
She obtained an emergency order preventing Preston from contacting Sophie while the assault investigation continued.
The Whitmores responded immediately.
Eleanor released a statement describing a “tragic misunderstanding during an emotionally charged theft incident.”
Celeste postponed her honeymoon and told reporters she was praying for everyone.
No one publicly mentioned that Preston had attacked a child.
Adrian was suspended for copying security files outside the hotel’s ordinary chain.
“I preserved evidence after a deletion,” he told investigators.
The hotel claimed he violated policy.
Before surrendering his badge, Adrian provided the camera audit log.
Preston had entered the security office forty minutes before the ceremony using an executive master credential.
He claimed he wanted to check a private delivery.
The security employee on duty remembered no delivery.
The deleted forty-seven seconds came from a terminal inside that same office.
Preston’s credential was not used for the deletion.
Celeste’s was.
Her wedding account included temporary administrator access so she could control private-camera restrictions around the bridal suite.
When detectives asked Celeste why she deleted the footage, she said she had removed an embarrassing dressing-room clip by mistake.
The ballroom camera did not cover the dressing room.
That night Sophie woke crying.
“Daddy said I ruined the wedding.”
“He was wrong.”
“He asked me before he hit me.”
“What did he ask?”
Her fingers pressed against the bandage near her temple.
“He said, ‘Who gave it to you?’”
