Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE AISLE

The oak menu board exploded against Sophie’s head before I understood that Preston had swung it.
Wood cracked like a rifle shot.
My eight-year-old daughter collapsed onto the ivory aisle runner. Her flower basket rolled away, scattering white petals beneath the wedding tables. One shoe slipped from her heel. A small cut opened near her temple.
“You filthy little brat!” Preston shouted. “How dare you steal from me?”
I fell to my knees.
“Sophie. Look at me.”
Her eyes found mine, unfocused with shock. I pressed a folded napkin against the cut while my other arm shielded her body.
Around us, chairs scraped backward. Guests recoiled, but no one approached.
Celeste stood in her wedding gown several feet away. She did not look at Sophie’s face.
She stared at the blood staining her aisle runner.
Sophie’s fingers locked around my sleeve.
“Mommy… I didn’t take it.”
“I believe you.”
Preston remained above us, fists clenched beside his custom tuxedo.
“Ask her where she put it.”
“You struck your daughter.”
“She stole from me.”
“She is eight.”
My voice broke on the number.
Eleanor crossed the ballroom in her formal gown and placed one jeweled hand on Preston’s shoulder.
For one second, I expected her to pull him away.
Instead she looked down at Sophie with cold irritation.
“Enough. Stop making a fuss. Call the police.”
Sophie flinched.
I stared at the woman who had just instructed strangers to treat an injured child as a criminal.
Then I saw the security camera blinking above the ballroom entrance.
My fear hardened.
“I demand to see the CCTV footage. Now.”
The doors opened.
Adrian Cole, the hotel’s security manager, rushed inside carrying a tablet. His gaze moved from the shattered board to Sophie, then to Preston.
He knelt beside us.
“An ambulance is coming.”
“Show me the video.”
Preston stepped closer.
“This is a family matter.”
Adrian rose slowly.
“An injured child inside my hotel is a security matter.”
He opened the camera system.
For several seconds, his thumb moved across the screen.
Then he stopped.
“What?” I demanded.
Adrian looked toward the camera above the doors.
“The ballroom feed did not fail.”
Preston’s expression tightened.
Adrian turned the tablet away before any of us could see it.
“Someone with administrator access deleted forty-seven seconds immediately before Mr. Whitmore struck Sophie.”
Eleanor released Preston’s shoulder.
May you like
Celeste went pale.
And before I knew what my daughter had supposedly stolen, I understood that someone had prepared to hide what happened.
