Chapter 2 - THE THING NO ONE COULD DESCRIBE

Paramedics carried Sophie out beneath the eyes of two hundred wedding guests.

Preston tried to follow the stretcher.

I blocked him.

“You do not come near her.”

“I’m her father.”

“You used a solid board against her head.”

His face changed when the police entered the ballroom.

At the hospital, Sophie received three small stitches. The scans showed no skull fracture, but the doctor diagnosed a concussion and ordered close observation.

A child-protection investigator interviewed us separately.

Preston claimed Sophie had taken a private item from his tuxedo jacket.

When officers asked him to describe it, he said it was a family possession.

Eleanor called it valuable jewelry.

Celeste called it a hotel access item.

Their stories did not match.

Sophie remembered walking through the bridal corridor before the ceremony. She had been carrying her basket, jacket, and Celeste’s emergency sewing kit.

“Did you take anything from Uncle—” the interviewer stopped and corrected herself. “From your father?”

Sophie shook her head.

“He said I had it.”

“Did anyone touch your jacket?”

Her eyebrows drew together.

“Aunt Celeste fixed my ribbon.”

“Anything else?”

“She told me to stand still.”

That evening Adrian called me from a private number.

He had preserved the remaining camera files before hotel executives removed his access.

A service-camera angle showed Sophie entering the bridal corridor.

Thirty seconds later, an adult in white fabric crouched beside her denim jacket.

The person’s face was hidden behind a floral arrangement.

“What did they do?” I asked.

“I can’t tell from the angle.”

“Was it Celeste?”

“I cannot identify someone from a sleeve.”

He sounded careful because careful evidence survived.

Then he told me something worse.

The figure approached Sophie twelve minutes before Preston first claimed anything was missing.

Whoever touched my daughter’s jacket had acted before the accusation began.
