Chapter 20 - OUR MARRIAGE

Stellan and I stayed married.

Barely, for a while.

His immediate protection mattered.

So did everything before it.

He had allowed Celeste too much authority.

Signed forms without reading.

Ignored Camille’s entitlement.

Dismissed my concerns about family pressure.

None of that made him part of the baby-placement scheme.

It still damaged trust.

We went to counseling.

I said:

“You keep waiting until something is obviously monstrous before you oppose your mother.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“I need you to notice smaller violations.”

“Yes.”

“Not because I train you.”

“I know.”

He changed before knowing whether I would stay.

That mattered.

He resigned from the family-office advisory committee.

Kept his operating-company role under independent board oversight.

Read every document.

Asked annoying questions.

Once returned a school form because a checkbox was unclear.

I told him:

“You have become unbearable.”

He smiled.

“Growth.”

Margot grew.

At six months, she loved sweet potatoes.

At nine months, hated socks.

At one year, walked four steps and fell into Stellan’s knees.

No one turned milestones into trust events.

We stopped discussing governance around her.

A child deserves to be a child before she becomes a beneficiary abbreviation.
