Chapter 22 - THE WEDDING VIDEO

Our daughter was eight when she saw part of the wedding video accidentally.

Not online.

A cousin played an old family montage at a reunion.

Someone had failed to cut one hallway shot.

Not the shove.

My father walking fast with stick.

Champagne table broken in background.

Our daughter asked:

“What happened there?”

The room froze.

I said:

“Old family problem.”

She looked at me.

“Wedding?”

“Yes.”

Later she asked for more.

We told her.

Not every corporate detail.

Enough.

Grandmother pushed.

Water broke.

Grandfather slapped.

Dad made bad decisions about delaying leaving.

Hospital.

Premature birth.

She listened.

Then:

“Was it my fault?”

That question destroyed me.

“No.”

“Because you were pregnant with me.”

“That makes you part of the timing. Not responsible.”

“Did Grandma hate me?”

“No.”

That was important.

“I think she wanted you very much.”

“Then why baby can wait?”

“Because adults can want a baby and still make unsafe choices around what they want.”

She frowned.

“Like wanting toy too much?”

“Much bigger. Similar idea.”

Then she asked her father:

“Did you want money more?”

He took a long time.

“I wanted money, a job, and Grandma’s approval. I also loved you. I acted like the first things were urgent enough to make bad decisions about Mom’s safety.”

“Were you bad dad?”

“I was a bad partner in that moment and I made choices that could have hurt you. Then I worked to be safer.”

She hugged him.

Not absolution.

Child love.

Different.

Then she asked Grandpa why he slapped.

He said:

“Because I wanted to punish Grandma instead of only helping your mom.”

“Did anger class work?”

He laughed.

“Apparently the whole family told you about that.”

“Yes.”
