Chapter 21 - MY DAUGHTER AT FIVE

At five, our daughter knew she was born early.

That was all.

“Tiny baby?”

“Very.”

“Did I fit in your hand?”

“No.”

“Dad says I did.”

“Your father is terrible with scale.”

She laughed.

Then:

“Why Grandma got mad at wedding?”

There.

We had agreed on simple truth.

“She cared too much about keeping the wedding on schedule and she pushed me when I needed to leave.”

“Did I come out?”

“Later at hospital.”

“Was Dad there?”

“Yes.”

“Grandpa?”

“Yes.”

“Did Grandma come?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because adults decided space was safer.”

She accepted.

No corporate deal.

No millions.

No CEO appointment.

Children deserve truth in portions they can digest.

Then she asked:

“Did Grandpa hit Grandma?”

We looked at each other.

My ex-husband answered:

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He was angry and made a bad choice.”

“Grandma pushed Mom.”

“Yes.”

“So both?”

“Yes.”

She frowned.

“Adults are weird.”

Correct.

Then:

“Did you do bad?”

She asked me.

I thought about the leak.

Not age appropriate yet.

“I made mistakes too, but not in the hallway.”

She nodded.

Good enough.
