Chapter 14 - HIS MOTHER AFTER CONTROL

My mother-in-law completed probation.

She did anger treatment.

At first, because court required.

Then continued.

I knew because my husband told me only after asking whether I wanted updates.

Good.

She never wrote me directly.

No-contact order.

When it expired, she sent one letter through Naomi.

I read it.

I believed the wedding had become proof of whether the family still mattered after Riston moved toward your father’s company.

Interesting.

No apology yet.

She continued:

I resented that my son’s future seemed to depend on your father rather than on me.

There.

Control.

Then:

I told myself your pregnancy was making everyone reorganize themselves around you.

I see now that pregnancy was not a strategy.

Better.

Then:

I pushed you.

No passive voice.

You fell because I pushed you.

Good.

Then:

I did not cause your labor in any way doctors can prove, and I am not claiming responsibility for that medically.

Strange.

Precise.

Then:

But I created danger.

Yes.

At the end:

I am sorry.

No request to meet baby.

That mattered.

I did not answer.

Not yet.

Her consulting fee from Northgate paid after closing:

$1.25 million.

People asked why she got money after conviction.

Because she performed contract work.

The excess fee was reduced.

The lawful portion remained.

Consequences are not supposed to rewrite unrelated economics.

She paid legal fees.

Fines.

No poverty.

No dramatic mansion seizure.

Then her relationship with my husband changed.

She blamed him for failing to protect the fee.

He blamed her for everything.

Therapist apparently stopped him.

Good.

He told me later:

“I wanted Mom to be the whole villain so I could be the son who got used.”

“You were used.”

“I also chose.”

“Yes.”

That sentence became his work.

I also had work.

I had spent years letting my father solve things.

Jobs.

Lawyers.

Housing.

When I separated, I nearly moved into his guesthouse.

Then stopped.

I leased my own townhouse.

Paid myself.

My interior design consultancy had money.

I did not need to become dependent because I was hurt.

My father complained:

“Guesthouse is empty.”

“I know.”

“Rent is ridiculous.”

“I know.”

“You’re stubborn.”

“Genetic.”

He laughed.

May you like

Good.

We loved each other better with a little distance.
