Chapter 7 - AUDREY’S RED BOOK
Audrey denied possessing the book until police searched her lake house.
They found it inside a locked bedroom cabinet.
The cover read Carter Grand Events — Private Owner Distributions.
The flash drive remained taped inside the spine.
Audrey claimed she had never noticed it.
Forensic evidence showed the tape had been lifted and replaced.
She knew.
The drive contained Anna’s complete audit.
It also held recordings, emails, ownership documents, and copies of every vendor invoice she believed fraudulent.
Anna had created two versions.
One for regulators.
One for me.
The folder labeled THOMAS opened with a video.
Anna sat inside her office three days before the crash.
“If you are watching this, I failed to explain before Robert acted.”
She looked tired.
Her hair was pinned carelessly behind her head.
“I need you to understand something before you decide whether to save the company. Carter Grand Events can survive exposure. Robert’s control cannot.”
She explained Blue Lantern Services, the false staffing companies, and the use of children at private events.
She traced money to Robert, Helen, Audrey, and Charles Mercer.
Then she addressed the shares.
Her original investment had purchased twenty-six percent.
A protective clause increased it to thirty-four percent if Robert falsified ownership, diverted collateral, or used company funds to attack a beneficiary.
He had done all three.
The children’s trust owned thirty-four percent.
My eighteen percent brought our combined interest to fifty-two.
Robert had never legally controlled the company after Anna’s final audit.
He controlled the records.
Anna’s next recording captured Robert confronting her.
“You will not hand my company to children,” he said.
“They will have professional trustees.”
“You think Thomas will choose you over us?”
“I think he deserves the truth.”
“If you file this audit, we report the vendor accounts under your credentials.”
“You created those credentials.”
“We have witnesses.”
“Your family?”
“My family knows what loyalty means.”
Anna’s voice became quieter.
“And if I refuse?”
Robert answered:
“Thomas loses his job. You face charges. The children lose the estate. You will discover how quickly a mother becomes filth when people believe she stole from them.”
That was where the phrase began.
Spawn of filth.
Robert’s insult at the party was not random cruelty.
It repeated the threat he made to Anna before she died.
The audit also revealed Carter Hill Estate did not belong personally to Robert and Helen.
Anna’s investment trust had purchased the mortgage after Robert defaulted.
My parents retained conditional occupancy.
The conditions prohibited fraud, coercion of beneficiaries, and commercial use involving unlawful labor.
The anniversary party violated every condition.
Sarah sought termination of their occupancy.
The court placed the estate under a receiver pending hearing.
Robert and Helen were moved temporarily into their debt-free condominium.
They called it eviction.
It was preservation.
Audrey asked to cooperate.
Her attorney said she would testify about the company records, the crash cover-up, and the guardianship plan.
In exchange, she wanted leniency and protection from Robert.
I agreed to nothing personally.
Prosecutors would decide.
During her first interview, Audrey admitted the anniversary confrontation had one more purpose.
The national buyer was waiting for a recorded statement proving the children had no valid ownership claim.
After my expected arrest, Helen planned to force Rebecca to read that statement on camera.
Police recovered the prepared script.
