Chapter 5 - THE BLUE ELEVATOR

Rebecca remembered the elevator immediately.

It was inside Carter Hall, the family’s largest event venue.

Guests used the marble lobby lifts.

Staff used a narrow blue elevator behind the catering kitchen.

Helen took the children there during the previous summer’s charity gala.

“She said Mom hid bad papers downstairs,” Rebecca told me.

“What did she make you memorize?”

“Four, two, seven, star.”

“A code?”

“For the basement room.”

“Did you enter?”

“Yes.”

“What was inside?”

“Boxes. Old computers. Mom’s name on folders.”

“Did Grandma take anything?”

“A red book.”

Samuel remembered carrying the book upstairs under his apron because Helen’s hands were full.

Jacob remembered being told not to touch a wooden recipe box on the bottom shelf.

Police and the receiver searched Carter Hall.

The basement code still worked.

The storage room contained old financial records Robert had claimed were destroyed after a flood.

No water damage appeared.

Boxes held vendor invoices, payroll summaries, and handwritten ledgers dating back twelve years.

Anna’s name covered several folders.

Not because the records implicated her.

Because she had marked them during her audit.

The red book was missing.

The wooden recipe box remained.

Inside were handwritten cards from Anna.

Not recipes.

Instructions.

CHECK VENDOR OWNERSHIP.

COMPARE EVENT STAFFING TO PAYROLL.

ASK WHY CHILD PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE W-2 FORMS.

One card listed twelve companies.

All received large payments from Carter Grand Events.

Eight belonged to Robert’s friends or relatives.

Three had no physical office.

The final company, Blue Lantern Services, belonged to Audrey.

Carter Grand Events paid it 3.2 million dollars over six years for “specialized temporary staffing.”

The parties in question had been staffed by existing employees, volunteers, and children.

Anna had discovered the money.

Robert blamed her before she could present it.

The receiver recovered old camera footage from the basement server.

One clip showed Anna entering the storage room seven weeks before her death.

She looked exhausted but determined.

Helen followed.

“You will stop this,” Helen said.

Anna placed the wooden box on the shelf.

“You used children as free labor and invoiced professional staff.”

“They are family.”

“You billed clients for workers who did not exist.”

“Robert built this company.”

“With my money and stolen payroll.”

Helen’s face sharpened.

“You married Thomas. You did not buy authority over us.”

“I bought shares under a signed agreement.”

“You will never turn our son against us.”

“He has a right to know.”

Helen stepped closer.

“If you tell him, we will tell the police you designed the vendor accounts.”

“You already used my credentials.”

“Then imagine how believable it will look.”

The recording ended when Helen reached toward the camera.

The next clip had no sound.

Anna returned alone and placed something inside the recipe box.

Police found only cards.

The bottom panel sounded hollow when tapped.

A technician opened it.

A small key lay beneath the wood.

Attached was a paper tag.

CARTER FLEET LOCKER 19.

The fleet storage facility still existed.

Locker 19 had been emptied the day after Anna’s fatal crash.
