Chapter 12 - THE SENTENCES

Robert was sentenced first.

The court considered his age, leadership, financial loss, use of vulnerable beneficiaries, obstruction, and exploitation of a fatal crash.

He received nine years in coordinated custody, followed by supervised release and restitution.

The sentence did not assume he intended Anna’s death.

It punished the fraud, cover-up, child exploitation, and repeated attempts to seize control.

Before deputies approached, he said:

“I built that company from nothing.”

The judge answered:

“You built a business with other people’s money, labor, and trust, then treated their rights as disobedience.”

Helen received six years, followed by home detention, probation, restitution, and permanent restrictions on serving as guardian, trustee, charity manager, or custodian of minor assets.

She spoke about preserving family unity.

The judge said:

“You used family as a word for control.”

Audrey received three years in custody, supervised release, restitution, and disqualification from corporate fiduciary roles.

Her cooperation reduced exposure.

Her direct benefit, false documents, privacy breach, and participation in the guardianship plan prevented probation alone.

Mason received eighteen months, followed by supervision, community service, and driving restrictions.

He also faced civil liability through insurance and restitution.

His prompt panic did not excuse leaving Anna.

His later cooperation and youth at the time reduced the sentence.

Mercer received four years and permanent loss of his law license.

Dr. Porter received probation, home detention, professional sanctions, and permanent loss of her medical license after disciplinary proceedings.

The receptionist who sold my therapy records received a lesser sentence and restitution obligations.

My own diversion continued.

I completed anger-management treatment, community service, and every reporting condition.

After eighteen months without another offense, the battery charge was dismissed.

The dismissal did not make the kick disappear.

I told the children exactly what happened.

Rebecca asked:

“Would you still kick him if you could go back?”

“No.”

“Even knowing the plan?”

“Especially knowing the plan. I gave him what he wanted.”

Samuel said:

“But you came for us.”

“Yes.”

“That part stays.”

The civil resolutions restored most stolen assets.

Carter Hill Estate returned fully to the children’s trust.

My home guarantee was voided.

The lender paid part of the legal costs under a settlement acknowledging verification failures.

The false restitution fund closed.

The children’s accounts were restored.

Recovered property, insurance, company assets, and restitution returned approximately eighty-three percent of direct losses.

The remaining amount became enforceable judgments.

Employee retirement contributions were restored before any family shareholder received money.

Carter Grand Events survived restructuring.

Three venues were sold.

Miriam remained chief executive.

The company was renamed Hearthline Events after employees voted to remove the Carter name.

The children’s trust retained its protected shares under professional management.

I declined the chief executive role.

I accepted a limited board seat with independent oversight.

No single family member could control the company again.

Carter Hill Estate remained empty while trustees evaluated its future.

Selling it would strengthen the children’s trust.

Keeping it would preserve Anna’s investment history.

Sarah opened the final sealed envelope from Anna’s estate.

Her letter said:

If Carter Hill is ever used to make children work for food, do not preserve it as a monument to our family. Make it a place where children are fed before anyone asks them to serve.
