Chapter 15 - THE MONEY BEHIND VESPERA’S PLAN

There was some money.

Not a fortune.

Not the motive.

But enough to matter.

Vespera had paid:

$2,500 adoption attorney retainer? Lydia only consultation, maybe $450. Better:

$650 consultation.

$3,800 for Calista’s home-study renewal.

$1,200 for crib/furniture.

$900 for legal packet prep with another family lawyer? No, should not have rogue lawyer. Better no.

Total around $6,000.

Vespera had framed it as:

Preparing for any path.

Calista believed some costs related to her general adoption process.

Then one transfer:

$10,000 from Vespera to Calista labeled:

NEW START.

Not tied to our baby.

No evidence.

We do not turn money into sinister because timing.

Then Vespera later wrote:

I already spent thousands making sure you are ready. We cannot let Arianell’s mood decide everything.

There.

Sunk cost.

Not buying a baby.

But she began treating preparation cost as moral investment.

Then Calista replied:

It was my choice to spend. Stop.

Good.

Then:

VESPERA:

I am not watching you lose another chance because everyone is afraid to upset her.

Again.

This was family favoritism.

Vespera saw Calista’s pain as more legitimate than mine because Calista had suffered longer.

Pain competition.

Then Oswin admitted:

“Mom always did this.”

Did what?

When one child hurt, everything rearranged around them.

Calista had serious asthma as a child.

Oswin’s birthday trip canceled.

No problem.

But Vespera said:

“You can have another birthday.”

There.

Same logic.

When Oswin got college scholarship, Calista was recovering from surgery.

Vespera asked him not to celebrate “too loudly.”

He learned:

His abundance should shrink around Calista’s scarcity.

Not Calista’s fault.

Vespera’s pattern.

Then infertility intensified it.

Arianell can make another.

My daughter has none.

Same sentence in adult form.

Then I almost felt sorry for Calista.

Not enough to invite her to birth.

Enough to see Vespera had damaged both children differently.

Oswin learned to surrender joy.

Calista learned grief entitled her to priority.

Now both were trying to unlearn.

Then one good thing.

Calista restarted her general adoption process with a different agency only after consulting therapist.

She informed us through counsel?

No need. That is her business.

We heard from Oswin later with my permission.

I felt something unexpected.

Relief.

Her future motherhood did not have to depend on mine.

Good.

Then I felt guilty for relief because another child would enter complexity.

May you like

But that was not my control.

Healthy boundaries apply both ways.
