Chapter 23 - EVAN

Evan had been eight on the day Lily was chained.

For years, I thought of him mostly as the child whose birthday became my daughter’s trauma.

Unfair.

He had been eight too.

Margaret told him Lily was not family.

He repeated it.

Adults created the weapon.

At twelve, Evan asked to speak with Lily during a family therapy session.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily shrugged.

“For what?”

“I said Grandma told me you weren’t a Whitmore.”

“You were eight.”

“I still said it.”

“So?”

He looked confused.

Lily continued.

“Grandma chained me, not you.”

That answer was kinder than I expected.

Then:

“But you laughed.”

Evan went pale.

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Everyone else was.”

Children learn crowds faster than morals.

“I’m sorry.”

This time Lily said:

“Okay.”

They never became close cousins.

They became civil.

That was enough.
