I underwent my own investigation.
Not criminal.
Corporate.
Brody Urban’s board needed to determine how Meredith and Caleb accessed systems, how false certifications entered financing files, and whether I ignored controls.
Samuel Price hired an outside law firm and forensic accounting team.
I testified for twelve hours across three days.
“Did you share passwords with Meredith?”
“No.”
“Did she know your phone passcode?”
“Yes.”
“Did Caleb control your digital-signature token?”
“He administered the executive platform.”
“Were dual approvals required?”
“For final transactions.”
“How was the draft certification signed?”
“My token was used while my phone authenticated the request.”
“Where was your phone?”
I checked the date.
“At home during a dinner.”
“With Meredith?”
“Yes.”
“Did you review the security alert?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Caleb texted that it was a routine portal update.”
The investigator continued:
“Did Northbridge raise valuation concerns?”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
“Told Caleb to resolve them.”
“Did you contact Eleanor directly?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I considered it operational.”
“You owned forty-six percent and served as chief executive.”
“Yes.”
“Why rely entirely on a conflicted subordinate?”
“I did not know he was conflicted.”
“Did you know Halcyon was owned by Meredith’s brother?”
“I knew Julian managed the fund. The documents described the buyer as institutionally independent.”
“Did that not concern you?”
“I believed disclosure counsel had handled it.”
“Did you verify?”
“No.”
Each no removed another part of the story in which I was only deceived.
I had delegated.
Trusted.
Prioritized speed.
Accepted summaries.
Married Meredith after knowing her family did business near mine.
Then dismissed concerns because asking harder questions threatened the future I wanted.
The board found no evidence I joined the fraud.
It found serious governance failures.
I had allowed one executive to control document flow, digital authentication, and lender communication.
I failed to disclose family relationships adequately.
I pressured Northbridge for speed without reviewing its concerns.
I accepted a preliminary psychiatric explanation for Tanner partly because it fit the timetable Meredith presented.
The final finding read:
Lincoln Brody’s conduct was not fraudulent but materially enabled the environment in which fraud occurred.
I hated the sentence.
Then recognized it as accurate.
The board placed me on extended leave.
Samuel became interim chief executive.
Some newspapers said I had been removed from my own empire.
The company was not an empire.
