Chapter 14

Tanner’s recovery did not follow the trial schedule.
For months, he woke with phantom crawling sensations.
Medical tests showed no continuing poison.
His nervous system remembered.
Dr. Ortiz taught him to describe the sensation without accepting its explanation.
“My skin is sending a false alarm.”
Not:
Beetles are inside me.
He checked drinks less often.
Then more often after court hearings.
Progress moved forward and backward without asking permission.
At eleven, he entered the mansion once to collect belongings.
Police had released the property.
Meredith’s rooms were empty.
The kitchen smelled of cleaning solution.
Tanner stopped beside the counter where she made atole.
“Can we remove this?”
“The counter?”
“Yes.”
I almost said that was excessive.
Then remembered how often adults had called his fear excessive.
“We can renovate,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Will you live here again?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do you want to?”
“No.”
That answer surprised me.
The mansion had represented success after a childhood in rented apartments.
Caroline helped design its library and garden.
Selling felt like losing her again.
Keeping it asked Tanner to sleep inside the scene of his poisoning.
We sold.
Not immediately.
Not secretly.
Northbridge reviewed the effect on Tanner’s trust because company funds had once paid for portions of the property’s security improvements.
The sale proceeds went where ownership records required.
Tanner and I purchased a smaller house in Sewickley.
Four bedrooms still felt excessive.
The kitchen had windows overlooking a narrow backyard instead of a river.
Maeve continued working with us for another year, then entered a graduate nursing program.
At her farewell dinner, Tanner placed a mug in front of her.
Hot chocolate.
Not atole.
She sniffed it dramatically.
He laughed.
The sound filled the room without breaking anything.
“What did you put in it?” she asked.
“Five marshmallows.”
“Suspicious.”
“You should call poison control.”
“I might.”
Humor returned slowly.
May you like
Not humor that erased fear.
Humor Tanner controlled.
